Welcome to the Little Musical Caravan! Meet our team of registered music therapists and provisional practitioners who are passionate about social justice, child agency, and identity-affirming care. Trained through Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University of Wellington, our practitioners bring diverse musical styles, therapeutic experience, and lived perspectives to their work.

Emily Langlois Hunt

Director & Practice Manager

MMusTher (Hons), CT Counselling (CPCAB), CT Music Teaching (ABRSM), BA (Hons), PhD

  • Focus: Child-led play models, strengths-based practice, professional supervision, and neuroaffirming advocacy.

  • Background: Former itinerant music teacher with over 15 years of experience. Her practice is deeply informed by parenting neurodivergent children and her own lived experience with hidden disability and chronic illness.

  • Focus: Person-centered care, young adult therapy, intersectional identity exploration, and empowering self-expression.

  • Background: Master’s graduate from Te Herenga Waka whose research explored navigating his Filipino identity through music. He uses collaborative musical spaces to foster curiosity, wonderment, and authentic therapeutic connection.

  • Focus: Strengths-based & person-centered support, high-needs support, and building nature and community connection.

  • Background: Experienced in specialist school settings, adult day centers, support work, and recorder tuition. She uses creative musical relationships to help tamariki grow, self-advocate, and connect with the world around them.

Susannah Tierney

  • Focus: Resource-oriented, trauma-informed care, early childhood developmental needs, and whānau collaboration.

  • Background: Experienced across community mental health, adult disability, and early childhood settings. She creates playful, child-led musical environments that honour each child’s individuality and strengths.

Max McAlpine

Music Tutor

MMusTher (pending), PGDip Ed (Primary), BMus

  • Focus: Primary teaching background, improvisational musical dialogue, adaptive guitar/piano instruction, and youth engagement.
  • Background: Former primary and early childhood teacher, as well as a Wellington-based songwriter and musician. He uses improvisational music-making to build meaningful relationships and support young people in creative spaces.

Join the Little Musical Caravan Team

Are you a Master’s-trained Registered Music Therapist (or provisional practitioner), music student, or educator passionate about post-ableist, neuroaffirming, and culturally sensitive practice? We offer a supportive, collaborative, and supervision-backed environment across Wellington, Porirua, and Kāpiti.

We are always open to connecting with:

  • Registered & Provisional Music Therapists: Therapists seeking child-led, relational practice in mobile, studio, and community settings.

  • Music Tutors: Educators passionate about strengths-based, adaptive, and joy-centered music making.

  • Student Placement Interns: We host Master of Music Therapy (MMusTher) students from Te Kōkī New Zealand School of Music at Victoria University of Wellington for placements and internships.

Practice Requirements & Valued Qualities:

  • MMusTher degree or equivalent (or current enrolment for student placements)

  • Current MThNZ practising certificate or eligibility (for therapist roles)

  • Lived experience and intersectional identity are highly valued

  • Passion for youth-centered, relational work
