Parent Support and Resources

At the Little Musical Caravan, our care for your child goes beyond the therapy room. Parenting a child with extra needs or a neurodivergent profile brings deep joy, but navigating support alone can feel overwhelming. We provide parent support and resources so you can feel confident, grounded, and connected. From 1:1 guidance and community support groups to practical home tools and trusted links, we are here to encourage you every step of the way.

1:1 Parent Support Consultations

Sometimes you simply need a quiet space to talk, reflect, and share ideas without your child in the room. During a consultation, we meet with you one-on-one to discuss daily routines, sensory spaces, and home communication.

  • Personalised Strategies: We help you adapt everyday routines – such as bedtime or morning transitions – using gentle rhythm, music, and predictable structure.

  • Reflective Support: We offer a safe, non-judgmental space to ask questions, work through challenges, and celebrate your child’s wins.

  • Whānau-Centred Priorities: We ensure our musical time together aligns with your child’s natural interests and what matters most to your whānau at home.

Parent Support Groups & Coffee Mornings

Parenting is much easier when you are surrounded by people who truly understand. We host small, informal support groups and coffee mornings for parents and caregivers in Porirua.

  • Peer Connection: Connect with local whānau who share similar lived experiences in a warm, friendly space.

  • Shared Learning: Hear from guest speakers about neuroaffirming ideas, sensory tools, and local support options.

  • Low-Pressure Spaces: You are welcome to participate as much or as little as you like – there is never any pressure.

Trusted Neuroaffirming Parent Resources

Navigating education, disability support, and community networks can feel complex, but respectful, strengths-based care makes a world of difference. To support your whānau, we recommend exploring these trusted local and national organisations:

Local Whānau & Community Support

  • Āhuru Mōwai Trust (Porirua): A local trust dedicated to enriching the lives of tamariki with extra needs and their whānau. They create safe, accepting spaces where families can find support, respite, and room to take a breath.

  • Te Pīkau o Te Rangi: A whānau-centred early intervention service offering culturally grounded support for young children and their families across our local region.

  • Parent to Parent (Wellington & Kāpiti): Provides free, confidential peer support by connecting parents directly with trained volunteers who have shared lived experience. They also offer practical workshops and sibling support programs.

  • Communication Pathways: A speech and language practice based in Porirua empowering every child to find and express their unique voice. They offer child-led assessment, whānau-centred support, and Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) tools.

Neuroaffirming Information & Advocacy

  • Autism NZ: A free national service providing evidence-based information and lived-experience perspectives for autistic individuals and their families.

  • IHC Library (Wellington): A wonderful free resource in Wellington that posts books, practical guides, and sensory tools directly to your home anywhere in Aotearoa free of charge.
